Tips on Cutting, Tying, & Securing Ribbon!!!

Posted on

I love love love ribbon and it’s my favorite embellishment. I thought I would share some tips on cutting, tying, & securing ribbon because I get asked these questions a lot! Hopefully you find them helpful!!!

Tips on Cutting, Tying, & Securing Ribbon, www.LaurasStampPad.com

~ Tips for Cutting Ribbon ~

Cutting ribbon off the spool can be tricky because cutting too little is a waste that you toss aside for “another project” that hopefully comes soon! Cutting too much is a waste because then so little is cut off each end and tossed. When cutting ribbon for a card or any size piece like the card on the far left in the photo above, simply wrap the ribbon across the front of the piece, around to the back, and across the front again. It doesn’t need to be exact edge to edge and in fact I usually hang off a bit on both sides. That is the amount of ribbon needed to wrap the ribbon around and tie it into a knot.

EXAMPLE: To tie ribbon into a knot around a piece of 4″ cardstock, you would need 13″ of ribbon. That’s a smidge over the edge and across the front (4″), around to the back (4″), and across the front again with a smidge over (4″).

~ Tips for Tying Ribbon ~

Now for tying ribbon into a perfect knot so that it lays flat and doesn’t look like a “t”. The video will help a little bit more on this because it is hard to explain in words. So the ribbon is wrapped around the cardstock and there is an end on the left and on the right. Cross the right side of ribbon over the left end of ribbon and around to create the first knot. Then for the second knot, cross the left side of ribbon over the right side and around. Pull tight! It is important to do the opposite the second time meaning right over left, left over right. If you do right over left, right over left, the ribbon will come out like a “t”.

The directions above can go vice versa as well – left over right, right over left. I know this may sound confusing but just focus on your left and right hand and the piece of ribbon in it. Also, I tie the ribbon with it in my thumb and pointer finger. Then using my pinkie or another finger, I press down that first knot to keep it tight and secure so my knot is tight on my project.

~Securing Ribbon On My Project ~

This is probably the biggest question I get asked. I do not use adhesive to secure the ribbon on my project before tying it. With the tips above, I can usually get a nice tight knot so I don’t have to worry about it sliding off. Also, I like not having it stuck in a spot when I’m tying it because then I can slide it to the side or up and down to re position it if needed or if I change my mind. To do this, simple squeeze the cardstock a bit to curve it and slide the ribbon around. (See the video tutorial below for more on this.)

There are a few times if I’m adding ribbon to a layer that goes on top of my card base or project where I will add Stampin’ Dimensionals over the ribbon on the back or on the ends which does technically secure it after it is tied. For example, if I have a greeting with ribbon below it and I’m going to place it in the middle of my card, I will add Stampin’ Dimensionals to the back on the 4 corners. This does secure the ribbon that it won’t slide off the end because it can’t jump over the dimensional. Also, I like to use Stampin’ Dimensionals when adding a piece with ribbon because it gives a nice smooth look rather than flat adhesive.

I hope you found these tips and tricks helpful! If any of them are still confusing, feel free to reach out for clarification! If you have any tips to share, let me know in the comments below! I would love to hear them!

Here’s To An Epic Celebration!!!

Posted on

I know Sale-A-Bration is over but I still have a few more samples to share so let’s party on with this one! Here’s To An Epic Celebration!!! I got the inspiration for this card from Debbie Jones!

Here's To An Epic Celebration, www.LaurasStampPad.com

I love the color blocking and the use of the stamped images. You could always change up the colors to whatever you have lots of scraps left over or your favorite color combination!

I started with a Basic Black card base. Next, I layered on a piece of Whisper White (4″ x 5-1/4″) to the front as well as to the inside so I could write my message. Using a Basic Black card base is fun but it does make it hard to write on the inside. Then I cut the follow pieces for stamping – Tempting Turquoise (1-7/8″ x 5″), Daffodil Delight (1-7/8″ x 2-1/2″), and Rose Red (1-7/8″ x 2-1/2″). Using the images from the Epic Celebrations Stamp Set and Basic Black Ink, I stamped all over. Then I puzzle pieced each piece to the card front. For the greeting, I die cut out the circles with the Layering Circles Framelits and stamped the greeting in the center. I used Stampin’ Dimensionals to add the greeting to the center of the card!

Headphones, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Since the card base is black, I added a layer of Whisper White to the inside of the card (4″ x 5-1/4″). I stamped the headphones in the corner for a little extra decoration. Do you like to add a layer to the inside of your card and decorate it?? Let me know in the comments below! I would love to see if more people do that or don’t do that. Usually I don’t add a layer because I write big and usually a lot. 🙂

Technique Tuesday – Baking Pies!!!

Posted on

Happy Tuesday!!! You all know what that means…..I have a fabulous technique to share with you today! I’m sharing with you this amazing card using the Basket Weave Embossing Folder! Let’s get started baking pies!!! The inspiration for this card came from Sheran Rigg!

Baking Pies, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Isn’t this the sweetest?? 🙂 Okay, I’ll try to keep the puns to a minimum!

I started with a Whisper White card base. Next, I took a piece of Crumb Cake (3-3/4″ x 5″) and stamped the greeting at the top from the Fruit Basket Stamp Set. I stamped the greeting in Soft Suede Ink. Then, I die cut the squares with the Stitched Shapes Framelits in Whisper White and Real Red. Using the pears in the Fruit Basket Stamp Set, I stamped them in the corner. For the pears, I used Lemon Lime Twist Ink and Soft Suede. I added these to the Crumb Cake towards the bottom. Then I tied some Linen Thread around the center for a little texture and added this piece to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals!

You are the Sweetest, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Now for that focal point of the beautiful pie!!! I die cut out a circle with the Stitched Shapes Framelits and a scallop circle with the Layering Circles Framelits. Both of these were cut in Crumb Cake cardstock! Next, I ran the stitched circle through the Basket Weave Embossing Folder and then layered it onto the scallop circle. Then I lightly brushed over it all with a Sponge Dauber and Soft Suede Ink. Be careful not to go too dark with the ink or your pie will look burnt! 🙂 Then I added the pie to the card front! Doesn’t it look super adorable and real?!?!?!

The Basket Weave Embossing Folder was a Free Item with Sale-A-Bration that ended on March 31st but have no fear if you didn’t get it then. It will be available for purchase in the 2018-2019 Annual Catalog coming out in June! A few other fun stamp sets that have “sweet greetings” and fruit include the Cool Treats Stamp Set and Sprinkles of Life Stamp Set!

Happy Monday! Let’s Celebrate!!! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and survived April Fools Day! 🙂 I still have a few more Sale-A-Bration samples to share with all of you so bear with me. Sale-A-Bration is over but these are just too fabulous not to share! I got the idea for this card from fellow stamper, Karla E. Thanks for the beautiful card idea! Let's Celebrate, www.LaurasStampPad.com

I have really been loving Berry Burst lately and this card just adds in a few other favorites of mine too! Loving the color combination for sure!

I started with a Whisper White card base. Next, I layered on a piece of Berry Burst (4″ x 5-1/4″) and a piece of Bubbles & Fizz Designer Paper (1-1/2″ x 5-1/4″) to the left side. Then I die cut out the squares for the greeting using the Stitched Shapes Framelits and Layering Squares Framelits! Using the Amazing You Sale-A-Bration Stamp Set, I stamped the sun burst in Peekaboo Peach Ink. Then I stamped the greeting over the top in Berry Burst Ink.

Celebrate with Sequins, www.LaurasStampPad.com

I layered the squares together and added the greeting to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals for some texture. Then, I made a bow with the Peekaboo Peach Crinkle Seam Binding and stuck it on the corner with Mini Glue Dots. To finish off the card, I added a few Tutti Frutti Sequins! These things are fabulous because they come with adhesive on the back already! Woot Woot!

Don’t worry if you don’t have the Amazing You Sale-A-Bration Stamp Set, you can always swap out the greeting for your favorite! The card concept is still a fun one to play with!!!

A Wizard with a Crystal Ball!!!

Posted on

I have been having so much fun with the Myths & Magic Suite. You can see other samples here, here, and here! Now, today, I’m sharing a wizard with a crystal ball card!!!

Wizard with a Crystal Ball, www.LaurasStampPad.com

I love the color combination of Fresh Fig and Pool Party. Also, all of that bling and shine is just amazing and makes this card even more magical!

I started with a Fresh Fig card base measuring 11″ x 4-1/4″. Next, I took a piece of the Myths & Magic Designer Series Paper (4″ x 5-1/4″) and die cut an oval in the middle (side to side) and towards the bottom (to allow for the greeting up top). I used the Layering Ovals Framelits! Then, I took a piece of Whisper White big enough to cover the hole and stamped the 2 star images from the Magical Day Stamp Set in Basic Gray Ink. I stamped the larger star in full strength and the smaller cluster of stars was stamped off once for a lighter look! Then I added this piece to the card front!

Crystal Ball, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Now for the amazing wizard and his crystal ball!! I stamped him onto Whisper White in Memento Black Ink and colored him with Stampin’ Blends. I actually used the Light Bermuda Bay and Dark Pool Party.  These colors just seemed to be the right darkness/brightness I was looking for. Smoky Slate was used for the hair and Ivory for his face and hands! Using the coordinating Magical Mates Framelits (Bundle & Save 10%), I die cut him out and added him to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals. His crystal ball was punched out with a circle punch and the Myths & Magic Glimmer Paper. This can be redeemed as a Free Item for Sale-A-Bration so you can get all of these goodies!! I added the crystal ball with Stampin’ Dimensionals as well!

For the greeting, I stamped it from the Magical Day Stamp Set in Basic Gray near the edge of a piece of Pool Party cardstock. Then using the banner in the Magical Mates Framelits, I die cut it out. If you are worried about it moving as you put it through the Big Shot, just add a little post it note to hold it in place. Then I stamped the greeting again on a piece of scrap Whisper White (mostly just the top part of the greeting). Next, I cut it out on the sides and top freehand and left the extra on the bottom portion so that I could use that to help me line up the greeting with the Pool Party one. I placed them together and used Stampin’ Dimensional to secure them together and add it to the card front! I love the dual color for the greeting! It really makes it pop! To finish it off, I added some Epoxy Shapes to the corners of the greeting!

Party Pandas, www.LaurasStampPad.com

I feel like these cards can be done with any greeting down in that corner. So many different options and super cute for kids and kids at heart!

I started with Whisper White cardstock as the card base. Next, I took a piece of Pool Party (4″ x 5-1/4″) and stamped the greeting in the bottom right corner in Memento Black Ink. If you are using Stampin’ Blends to color the hat, be sure to use Memento Ink. If you would like to use markers, use Basic Black Archival Ink. Then, I added this piece to the card front and added a 1-1/2″ x 5″ piece of Bubbles and Fizz Sale-A-Bration Designer Paper to the left side. For the focal point, I used the Layering Ovals Framelits. Using the same black ink, I stamped the panda in the middle. I love using 1 ink pad and 1 stamp set for a card – Party Pandas Sale-A-Bration Stamp Set. I added the ovals to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals and finished it off with a few Tutti-Frutti Sequins.

Birthday Love Panda, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Technique Tuesday – Spritz with Care!!!

Posted on

Happy Tuesday!!! You all know that means I have a fabulous technique to share with you today! I also have a warning…….spritz with care! 🙂

Spritz with Care, www.LaurasStampPad.com

So this happened at stamp class and yes I did scream when I did it. The ladies all thought I saw a bug or something…..which I would have screamed over that as well. I spritzed and it was not pointed out but instead up and went all over my finger/hand/arm and all. Somehow I did save my clothes though! 🙂 All is good and it cleaned up very well!

Spritzed Daisy, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Isn’t this background super fabulous??? I just love flower and this cool background looks like it has texture and all.

I started with a Crushed Curry card base. Next, I took a piece of Whisper White (4″ x 5-1/4″) and placed it in a box for spritzing. I punched out 2 flowers with the Daisy Punch using the thicker cardboard stuff that comes in a pack of Designer Paper. It’s that white backing piece! I used this because then I’m not wasting cardstock and it holds up well for doing multiples. The 2 punched daisies were glued together in the center and off set to create this full beautiful flower. I placed one flower up high and one down low and spritzed with Night of Navy (Night of Navy and Alcohol mixture 70 Proof or less). Now the background is complete and once it was dry, I added it to the card base.

White Daisy, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Next, I tied some Night of Navy Crinkle Seam Binding around the center. For the centers of the flowers, I took a piece of Crushed Curry cardstock and spritzed with a little Daffodil Delight and a little Pumpkin Pie. Then I punched out the circles. I love how that little bit of spritzing adds so much to the center to make it come to life! For the greeting, I used the Petal Palette Stamp Set and the Pretty Label Punch. For that added layer of Crushed Curry to the greeting, I simply punched a second one and cut it in half, adding half to the top and half to the bottom.

My Video Tutorial below shows this all in action as well as a few “mistakes” or things that I didn’t think worked as well. Dragon Breathing Fire!!!

Posted on

Happy Monday!!! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Let’s get this week started off with a Dragon breathing fire!!! This is from the Myths & Magic Suite which you can see more fun samples here and here!

Dragon Breathing Fire, www.LaurasStampPad.com

I love the orange and green color combination and that little hint of bling in the middle! Of course, you could always change up the colors to suit your birthday boy or girl!!!

I started with a Whisper White card base. Next, I took a piece of Pumpkin Pie measuring 4″ x 5-1/4″ and stamped the star image all around the edges. This stamp is in the Magical Day Stamp Set and I used Pumpkin Pie Ink. Then, I added this piece to the card front.

Breathing Fire, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Now for the dragon piece, I took a 2-1/2″ square of Whisper White cardstock and stamped the dragon from the Magical Day Stamp Set in Memento Black Ink. Using the Stampin’ Blends, I colored in the dragon with Old Olive and Pumpkin Pie. I stamped the fire on a scrap piece and die cut it with the coordinating Magical Mates Framelits (Bundle & Save 10%). The fire was added with a Mini Stampin’ Dimensional cut down a bit. Next, I added this to the top portion of a 3″ x 5″ Old Olive piece of cardstock.

I stamped the greeting from the Picture Perfect Birthday Stamp Set onto a piece of Whisper White (1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″). The greeting was stamped in Pumpkin Pie Ink and added to the bottom portion of the Old Olive piece. I added a little bling with the Myths & Magic Designer Washi Tape in between the dragon and greeting and wrapped the ends to the back side. Then I added this piece to the card front.

This designer is super fabulous for any style of card. Just stamp your focal point up top and the greeting on the bottom. Add ribbon or washi tape in the middle for some decoration!

Coloring Ribbon with Stampin’ Blends!!!

Posted on

Happy Thursday!!! Today, I’m showing you coloring ribbon with Stampin’ Blends!!! This makes Whisper White Ribbon the best stuff ever because you can get any color!

Coloring Ribbon with Stampin' Blends, www.LaurasStampPad.com

This card has so much fabulous parts to it that I just don’t know which I love more. Is it the coral organza ribbon, the fabulous greeting, those bursts alone the edge or the monochromatic words in the background! Let me know your favorite in the comments below!

I started with a Calypso Coral card base. Next, I took a piece of Daffodil Delight (4″ x 5-1/4″) and stamped the half sunburst from the Amazing You Sale-A-Bration Stamp Set along the left side. These were stamped in Rich Razzleberry Ink. As for the spacing on these, there are 2 ways to stamp them. Stamp the outside two first and then the middle or stamp the middle first and then either side. Either of these ways is a little better than stamping them left to right (or vice versa). After stamping, I added the three die cut YOU to the right hand side with the Fine Tip Glue Pen. These were die cut from the Celebrate You Sale-A-Bration Thinlits.

Simply Amazing, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Now you may be wondering where the coral organza ribbon came from! I actually colored the Whisper White Organza Ribbon with the Dark Calypso Coral Stampin’ Blends Marker! It is super easy to do and then you have ribbon for any product! Simple run the marker down the ribbon on both sides over a piece of scrap paper. Be sure to take a paper towel over the ribbon to get off an access ink so that it doesn’t rub off on your project. I tied the ribbon around the Daffodil Delight and into a knot. Then I added this piece to the card base. For the greetings, I used the Layering Ovals Framelits and the words from the Amazing You Stamp Set. I stamped it in Rich Razzleberry Ink. Then, I added this to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The Amazing You Stamp Set is one of the sets you can pick out for a $50.00 order with Sale-A-Bration. The Celebrate You Thinlits are in the $100 level for Sale-A-bration. You can check out all of the items you can pick out at both levels here! A little over a week left of Sale-A-Bration!!!

Here’s To An Epic Celebration!!!

Posted on

This card and greeting “Here’s To An Epic Celebration” just makes me think rock star! Then I want to say, “Party on Wayne, Party on Garth!” Name that movie in the comments below! 🙂

Epic Celebration, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Okay enough craziness! This card is super cool and great for the younger kids as well as the older ones! I have an uncle that plays the guitar and this would be perfect for him too!

I started with a Whisper White card base. Next, I took a piece of Lemon Lime Twist cardstock and splattered water all over it with an Aqua Painter. Then I poured Silver Embossing Powders over the top, tapped off the excess, and set it with the Heat Tool. Check out this post for a full tutorial and video! Since the water makes the paper a little warped, I like to add this layer on with some Tear And Tape for a nice strong hold.

Silver Splatter, www.LaurasStampPad.com

Now for the focal point, I took a piece of Whisper White and stamped the guitar and greeting in Memento Black Ink from the Epic Celebration Sale-A-Bration Stamp Set! Using the Pumpkin Pie Stampin’ Blends Marker, I colored in the guitar. Next, I layered this onto a Basic Black square. I wrapped some Silver Metallic Thread around my hand to make loops, slide them off my hand and twisted into a figure 8 and laid them on the back of the focal point. Then I added Stampin’ Dimensionals to secure the ends and fan out the loops on the back. Once all was secure, I added this to the card front. I really struggled with where to place it because a lot of my splatter was in the center of the card and I had to cover some of it. TIP: Splatter more on the edges next time. 🙂

Don’t forget that there is only a week and half left of Sale-A-Bration. There are the original items, 2nd Release Items, and even Catalog Items for you to pick from! My favorite catalog item is the Myths & Magic Glimmer Paper! Bring on the bling!!!! Now is a great time to stock up on cardstock, etc or get a few items off your wish because you are rewarded with freebies! Click here to start shopping! Please so reach out if you have questions on anything! Always happy to help with product questions, inspiration, and more!
